When a person is exposed to asbestos, in many years that person may exhibit a variety of symptoms that are indicative of past exposure. Some of the signs of asbestos exposure are more serious than others. Probably the most serious of the consequences is pleural effusions.

The pleura, or lining of the chest cavity, has two layers. The inner layer covers the longs while the outer layer lines the rib cage and the diaphragm. Between these two layers, the body produces a fluid. This fluid acts like the oil in a car’s engine. It allows the lungs to expand and contract smoothly which, in turn, allows a person to inhale and to exhale easily. Sometimes, the body produces too much of the fluid. When this happens, fluid can build up between the two layers of the pleura. When the build up occurs, it is referred to as a pleural effusion.

This side effect develops once cancer cells have spread into the pleura. When the cells migrate, they irritate the pleura and cause fluid to build up. The most common types of cancer to cause pleural effusions are lung cancer, breast cancer, ovarian cancer, lymphomas, and mesothelioma.

When fluid builds up in the pleura, it presses on the lungs. This makes it less easy for a person to breath since the lung is unable to expand to its full capacity due to the presence of the fluid. In some situations, the lung, or at least part of it, will collapse. When the lung collapses, the person is likely to become increasingly breathless, not only while active but also while resting. Chest pain and a cough might also develop.

Pleural effusions are typically detected through the use of a chest x-ray of an individual who is x-rayed while lying on his or her side. By the time a pleural effusion develops, a person has usually already developed mesothelioma. This is not always the case but it frequently is true. Mesothelioma is caused by exposure to asbestos. The tiny fibers get trapped in the lungs, irritating them to the point that scar tissue develops. Because the scar tissue is exposed to asbestos, it is not an exact replica of the previous tissues. This results in tumors developing.

It’s believed that smoking is responsible for 80% to 90% of all symptoms of lung cancers. But now a new study shows that smoking (including dangerous second hand smoke) might also contribute to other, non-lung cancers, more so than anyone ever thought before.

Using data from the National Center for Health Statistics, a team of researchers compared death rates from lung cancer to death rates from other cancers and found that smoking may have led to over 70% of cancer deaths among men in Massachusetts in 2003.

The lung and other cancer death rates kept in line from year to year (data from 1979 to 2003 were used), especially in men 30 to 74 years old – and this suggests that the cancers have the same cause.

“The fact that lung and non-lung cancer death rates are almost perfectly associated means that smokers and nonsmokers alike should do what they can to avoid tobacco smoke,” explains Bruce Leistikow an adjunct professor of public health sciences at the University of California, Davis.

“It also suggests that increased attention should be paid to smoking prevention in health care reforms and health promotion campaigns.”

The reason smoking causes lung cancer (and perhaps other cancers too) is that the smoke itself has carcinogenic chemicals in it.

As these chemicals are put into the lungs, year after year, they cause damage to the DNA that combines with oxidative stress and inflammation to promotes both the start and growth of tumors.

The DNA damage, and the inability of the body to fix it, is what causes malignancy, i.e. cancer.

Because lung cancer in its early stages is difficult to detect and presents with virtually no symptoms, by the time the disease is found it’s typically advanced. The five year survival rate for lung cancer is 15% – certainly not a good number.

This is why the medical community is so adamant about keeping people from smoking in the first place, or helping smokers to quit.

How long you smoke (and how much) has an impact on your chances of developing lung cancer.

If you stop smoking, your chances for lung cancer go down steadily as the damage to your lungs is repaired and contaminating particles are gradually removed from the lung tissue.

Passive smoke, living or working with a smoker, can also be a cause of lung cancer in nonsmokers.

Research in the U.S., U.K., Europe and Australia has shown the risk from passive smoke, and recent work has found passive smoking to be potentially even more dangerous than direct smoking. Avoid this type of smoke at all costs.

As If Lung Cancer Weren’t Enough… Smoking Likely Causes Other Cancers Too continuedSo even though medical science has examined other potential cancer causes, such as diet and contamination from the environment, this research suggests that smoking is more likely to be the culprit behind cancer developing.

The authors believe that the association between cancer death rates over a 25-year period is proof positive that more effort should be given to avoiding tobacco smoke, both for smokers and non-smokers alike to prevent symptoms of lung cancer from developing.

Preventing young people from starting is of particular importance. The UC Davis work appears online in the November 24, 2008 issue of BMC Cancer and calls for better tobacco control efforts.

Five types of large-cell lung cancer

The five types of large-cell lung cancer have differing varieties of cancer cells. The cancer cells of each category produce and multiply in unusual effects:

1. Squamous cell carcinoma – Cancer starts in the squamous cells, thin flat cells that appear like fish scales. It’s called epidermoid carcinoma.
2. Large cell carcinoma – Cancer in which the cells are big and seem to be irregular when examined under a microscope.
3. Adenosquamous carcinoma – Cancer that begins in cells. Cancer cells appear to be firm when inspected under a microscope.
4. Adenocarcinoma – Cancer that begins in groups in glandular assets.
5. Undifferentiated carcinoma – Cancer cells that do not seem to be normal. They spread fast.

Treatment:

1. Surgery – Surgery is the ideal medication for lung cancer. The body is normally opened up for the lungs to be treated directly.
2. Radiation is a common treatment for lung cancer. Radiation therapy utilizes high-energy rays to destroy cancer cells. It distresses cells only in the treated area.

What Is Mesothelioma and How is it Contracted?

Mesothelomia is a rare form of lung cancer contracted from breathing in or ingesting asbestos fibers. The common source of mesothelioma is from industrial sites where the workers are subject to exposure to mesothelioma. There are several factors that make this disease dangerous. One is that the symptoms of mesothelioma are fairly common and almost indistinguishable from regular lung, cardiac, or digestive disorders, and are thus often misdiagnosed.

Another problem with mesothelioma is that the symptoms don’t immediately manifest upon inhalation or ingestion of the asbestos fibers. They take anything from 20 to 50 years before becoming apparent, and even then the only way to distinguish them from the symptoms of other, less dangerous disorders is to conduct an x ray.

Aside from direct exposure to asbestos, the fibers can also be carried upon the clothes of people working around asbestos, so that anyone they come in contact with can also accidentally breath in the fibers once they become airborne.

What Are the Symptoms and Effects of Mesothelioma?

The most common symptoms of mesothelioma that hits the lungs and chest is a tight pain around the chest area, difficulty breathing, and loss of stamina. These symptoms are caused because the disease generates tumors around the fibers, and the body reacts to it by trying to generate fluids to flush out the tumors and fibers. Pressure from these fluids, along with internal wounds caused by the fibers and tumors themselves are what cause the chest pain. Naturally, the tumors also restrict breathing efficiency, hence the difficulty breathing and stamina loss.

Abdominal mesothelioma manifests as sharp abdominal pains and weight loss because of tumors in the stomach lining. Unlike lung mesothelioma, however, there is an external sign of trouble for abdominal mesothelioma, in the form of swellings in the stomach region.

The effects of mesothelioma are the same wether it hits the lung or stomach. The tumors cause internal bleeding and hemmorhage, and the fluids generated by the body to combat the cancerous growths will eventually lead to clogged arteries which can cause heart failure.

How is it Commonly Treated?

The most common effective treatment for mesothelioma is to employ heat surgery, like using a laser, in conjunction with chemotherapy. Regular surgery to remove the tumors is ineffective in combating mesothelioma, and leads to death shortly after the operation. The average life expectancy of a person after mesothelioma surgery is 5 years. The heat surgery treatment, on the other hand, is capable of localizing the tumors to remove them without damaging the surrounding healthy tissue. This, combined with chemotherapy medication, is noted to be most successful proven treatment method. Alternative mesothelioma treatments are being researched by various medical institutes to try and find even better solutions.

What Alternative Treatments Exist?

There are two main methods of alternative treatment for mesothelioma, mainly the use of nutritional supplements in conjunction with medicine and exercise, and the second being special medicines designed to boost the body’s immune system to combat the tumors. Reports regarding the two methods of treatment vary from institute to institute, with some reporting success and others not. In either case, classic medical institutes still advocate heat surgery and chemotherapy, as these treatment methods are tested and proven.

Nutritional Supplements – some research institutes have begun to explore medical and nutritional supplements which have two purposes as an alternative treatment for mesothelioma. The first purpose of the supplements is to promote the growth of healthy cells and to stem the growth of the tumors. While this does nothing to remove the tumors, it can at least stall the problem and extend the lifespan of the patient. The second type of research involves medicines which will help the body naturally flush the excess fluid in the chest and/or intestinal cavities, alleviating the pain and pressure of the patient. Both of these supplements are currently still being tested and few reliable reports are available as to their effectiveness.

Immuno-augmentive Therapy – this is an alternative mesothelioma treatment that involves bolstering the body’s immune system through medicine. The theory behind this alternative mesothelioma treatment is that, with enough support, the body’s natural immune system will eventually be able to overcome and heal the tumors, and once they are removed the body will heal itself naturally. This has been proven moderately effective in early cases of mesothelioma, but medium to late stage cancer has yet to be conquered by this method of treatment.

Each year statistics show that the number of cancer cases newly diagnosed continues to rise however advances in diagnostic procedures and treatments means that more and more lives are being saved. Not surprisingly, even more people could survive cancer if they knew the common signs and symptoms to look for because the earlier that cancer is diagnosed the better the chance of curing it.

This article will outline the main symptoms that are often experienced by sufferers of the most common forms of cancer. These symptoms can vary between people and so it may be that while some people experience all of the symptoms others may only have one or two.

Most common cancer in males

More and more often, I come across cases of nonsmokers who develop lung cancer. My attention is always drawn to news of this nature because my husband passed away at the age of 51 from cancer of the brain and lung. He never smoked a day in his life.

The complacency non-smokers have shared over the years is no longer a viable option. Smokers and non-smokers alike are vulnerable to a disease which is largely incurable. Among patients with this problem, only about 14% live five years after their diagnosis.

In the face of a disease that seems to have neither rhyme nor reason, what can we do to protect ourselves? First, assess your risk for this form of cancer; then take measures to prevent the disease.

What are the risk factors for this type of cancer?

Gender: Unfortunately, women seem to be more vulnerable to this disease. Research has shown that female smokers are more susceptible to the cancer-causing chemicals found in cigarettes. In another study, a gene linked to abnormal lung cancer cell growth was found to be more active in women than in men. It did not matter whether the women smoked or not.

A family history of lung cancer: Evidence suggests that there is a gene which predisposes offspring to develop lung cancer. However, the evidence is far from conclusive as the situation is made difficult by the fact that offspring of smokers have been exposed to a smoking environment since childhood and would therefore have a greater risk for developing the disease.

Scarring from previous lung disease: Scarring in lungs caused by tuberculosis or other lung disease can be a risk factor for this form of lung problem.

Second-hand smoke: Exposure to second-hand smoke has been shown to be a definite risk factor. Your risk increases by 30 percent from daily exposure to second-hand smoke. This is probably the most significant risk factor for lung cancer in non-smokers.

Exposure to radon: Radon is an odorless gas than can seep out of the soil into buildings. Worse yet, the gas can seep from the soil into water near residential communities. Radon has been implicated as a potential cause of lung cancer.

Air pollution: Long-term occupational exposure to diesel exhaust fumes may increase lung cancer risk by 47%. Air pollution in general is a risk factor in the general population. Swedish researchers estimate that as many as 1 in 10 cases of lung cancer may be caused by air pollution in the Swedish capital city, Stockholm.

Past Cancer Treatment: Researchers in Sweden who looked at the medical records of 140,000 breast cancer patients found that there was an increase of lung cancer 5 to 20 years after breast cancer treatment. Suspicion is that radiotherapy in the chest area may have made the lungs more susceptible to the disease.

Estrogen Replacement Therapy: According to researchers at the University of Pittsburgh, estrogen may fuel the growth of non small-cell cancer of the lung.

What preventative measures can we take?

Diet: An apple a day may keep this disease away. A Finnish study suggests that apples not only keep doctors away, but provide protection for the lungs as well. This study found that people who ate the most apples were 58 % less likely to develop this form of cancer. Other studies suggest that this cancer risk is lower among smokers and non smokers who ate at least 5 servings of vegetables and fruits daily.

Beta Carotene: A high intake of beta carotene compounds can lower your cancer risk; however, studies also show that the beta carotene is only effective when the compounds are ingested from whole foods such as peaches, melon, carrots, mangoes, dark leafy vegetables, squash etc. The opposite effect seems to take place with beta carotene supplements. A Finnish study reported 18% more lung cancer cases among heavy smokers who took beta carotene supplements. And a National Cancer Study on the effects of vitamin A and beta carotene was halted because smokers taking the supplements had 28% more cancer than those taking a placebo.

Selenium and Vitamin C: Taking selenium supplements on a long-term basis has been shown to decrease the incidence of lung cancer. In one study, people taking 55-200 mcg of the mineral daily had a 46% lower rate of lung cancer. As well, studies indicate that people who take less than 90 mg of vitamin C on a daily basis may have a 90% higher risk of lung cancer than those who take 140mg or more.

Avoid second-hand smoke and check your house for radon.

There are never guarantees in life, but it makes perfectly good sense to take some preventative measures as these can not only improve your overall quality of health and life but also prevent lung cancer.

Pancoasts syndrome is result of extension of tumour in the apex of the lungs which involves last cervical and first and second thoracic nerves compression of the nerves results in shoulder pain.

Cancer can spread in practically all organs. This type of cancer can spread in brain causing some neurological problems, in bones causing pain and fractures, bone marrow invasion causing cytopenias, liver metastases resulting in biochemical imbalance, adrenal metastases is also common but it does not results in insufficiency. systemic symptoms like anorexia, cachexia, suppressed immunity, weight loss, fever are general symptoms practically found in all patients in the later stages.

In some patients we can find hypercalcemia and hypophosphatemia due to ectopic parathyroid hormone releasing tumours.

Skeletal-connective tissue syndrome that is clubbing of fingers can also be seen in some patients. Some times retinal blindness is seen in patients suffering from small cell cancer.

Dermatological manifestations like dermatomyositis and acanthosis nigricans are also seen in some patients but very rarely.
