Lung Cancer Everything You Need to Know!
Filed Under Cancer | Leave a Comment
This article aims to offer you information on the causes of lung cancer as well as the different types of lung cancer.
Mesothelioma, a type of cancer that affects the lining of the lungs, is one of the rare type of lung cancers, with around 2,000 new cases being registered in the United States annually. The majority of the people who are afflicted by this form are those who were employed at some time or the other in asbestos factories and who invariably inhaled the toxic asbestos fumes. More appropriately called asbestos lung cancer, mesothelioma symptoms manifest themselves sometimes as much as 30 to 40 years after the asbestos inhalation.
Although smoking does not necessarily increase the risks of contracting Mesothelioma, it could aggravate the existing problem by causing other cancers in the air passages leading to the lungs. If you are a smoker and if you did work around asbestos at any time, it could possibly complicate your mesothelioma treatment.
Regular lung cancer, one of the most prevalent of all types of cancers all around the world is primarily caused by smoking. Secondary causes include inhalation of second-hand smoke as well as the gas radon.
According to the Environmental Protection Agency, radon is the leading cause of lung cancer among non-smokers; so much so, a national health advisory concerning radon was issued by the US surgeon general in 2005. The carcinogenic effects of radon have been proven beyond a doubt.
Lung cancer is categorized into small cell and non-small cell depending on the size.
Small cell lung cancer
This form of lung cancer grows very fast and spreads rapidly. The only thing to be grateful for is that it is not as prevalent as the other form, which is the non-small type. There are different methods of treatment depending on the circumstances.
Small cell lung cancer is detected with the help of an X-ray machine in addition to physical examinations, sputum tests and laboratory tests. A medical professional will also use a bronchoscope to get a detailed look inside the lungs. Despite huge medical advances in the treatment of cancer, there is yet no cure found for this type of cancer.
Non-small lung cancer
The detection of non-small lung cancer employs much the same methods as those of small. In addition it also uses Positron Emission Topography (PET) and CAT scans to locate the exact positions of the tumors.
Some of the more common symptoms of non-small lung caner include breathing difficulties, persistent coughing, presence of blood in the sputum, chest pains, loss of appetite and an overall run-down feeling.

Getting a Grasp of Peritoneal Mesothelioma
Filed Under Cancer | Leave a Comment
Mesothelioma is a form of cancer associated with exposure to asbestos in the workplace or home. There are three variations of the disease and all are aggressive and deadly. In this article, we take a look at peritoneal Mesothelioma.
Mesothelioma is referred to as the “asbestos” cancer because it is a associated with exposure to the toxic substance. The three forms are pleural, pericardial and peritoneal. Pleural refers to cancer in the upper chest area such as around the lungs. Pericardial refers to abnormal growths around the heart area and then there is peritoneal Mesothelioma.
Peritoneal Mesothelioma refers to cancer growths in the lining of the abdomen. The lining is known as the mesothelium, which is where the name comes from. Roughly 20 percent of all Mesothelioma cases are found in this part of the body, making it the second most common form diagnosed in patients behind the pleural version.
Peritoneal Mesothelioma is very hard to diagnose. It reveals symptoms of pain in the chest and abdomen area. This results in diagnosis running from gallbladder disease to hernias and beyond. Only after multiple imaging scans and in depth biopsies is the cancer usually successfully diagnosed. The question is then whether there is time to treat it.
All forms of Mesothelioma are difficult to treat because they grow latently and yet are very aggressive. Most are only discovered in the latest stages when treatment is difficult. That being said, one can expect an aggressive treatment plan with the focus on radiation and chemotherapy as well as potential aggressive surgical intervention. As with most cancers, the rate of success is highly dependent on when the cancer is discovered. The earlier the diagnosis, the better chance of surviving it. Mesothelioma, unfortunately, has a poor survivability rate with less than 10 percent of patients surviving more than five years.
Peritoneal Mesothelioma is a very rare form of cancer. That is good news as it can be a very deadly version as well.

Mesothelioma Surgery
Filed Under Cancer | Leave a Comment
Mesothelioma is a rare, deadly form of cancer which can occur in a number of types. Mesothelioma is caused by exposure to asbestos, a group of natural fibres which are extremely dangerous if inhaled as fibres. When fibres are inhaled they become lodged in the alveoli of the lungs and over a period of time these fibres make tissue and cells abnormal and cause mesothelioma cancer. Pleural mesothelioma is the most common form of mesothelioma cancer, accounting for approximately 75% of all mesothelioma cases.
The next most common form, peritoneal mesothelioma, accounts for 20% of all mesothelioma cases and pericardial mesothelioma accounts for the remaining 5%. Pleural mesothelioma affects the lining of the lungs, peritoneal mesothelioma attacks the peritoneum, which is the lining of the abdomen and pericardial mesothelioma affects the tissue surrounding the heart. All three of these types of cancer occur in extremely important areas of the human body and this is one of the reasons why it is so difficult to treat. Treatment methods such as radiation therapy can only be conducted with strict radiation dosage restrictions due to the possibility of damaging a vital organ such as the lungs or the heart.
Aggressive mesothelioma surgery is undertaken only by the strongest of mesothelioma patients because weaker patients are at risk of death within the first month after the operation. An experienced doctor will evaluate a patient before deciding that surgery is the best treatment method. He will take into account age, medical record, disabilities, allergies, sex, even weight. The operation will then take place. Mesothelioma surgery consists of cutting open a patient and removing the majority of cancerous cells from either the lining of the lungs, abdomen or heart in an attempt to gain long term control over the cancer. Due to the proximity of the cancer to major organs of the body, the operation can only be performed by extremely skilled surgeons. There is a chance that a patient will die during the operation.
A second type of mesothelioma surgery is called palliative procedures. This is a far less dangerous and aggressive form of surgery which does not attempt to gain long term control over the cancer. Palliative procedures are designed to lessen the symptoms for a patient when it is almost certain that the patient will die inevitably from the cancer.
Mesothelioma surgery can also be coupled with radiation therapy and chemotherapy in what is known as dual therapy. Patients would undergo surgery to get rid of the majority of the cancerous mesothelioma cells and then chemotherapy and radiation therapy would be used to kill off any remaining cells. This combination of treatments has proved to be effective and has one of the highest success rates for treatments of mesothelioma cancer.

Mesothelioma is a kind cancer which is not very frequent. If you are suffering from any of the symptoms of mesothelioma, you will first be diagnosed. Only proper diagnosis would indicate whether you are really suffering from the cancer.
In the initial stage, the mesothelioma cancer is diagnosed with the help of a CT Scan of either the chest or the abdomen. At times an X-ray can also be conducted. However, if the symptoms are excessive, a pathological exam will be conducted. This exam is done through biopsy if an abnormal tissue is found in your body. The doctor will cut a small piece of this abnormal tissue from the area of the problem and would test for the detection of the mesothelioma.
If your problem is too serious, your doctor may ask you to conduct the other following examinations. These may include thoracoscopy and peritoneoscopy
When you suffer from pleural mesothelioma, a special instrument called thoracoscope may be used by your doctor. He would look into your chest cavity with the help of this instrument. Through your chest wall a cut will be made into the chest between your two ribs and the thoracoscope would be placed there. However, when this test will be conducted you would be given a local anesthetic. Through this test, the doctor would be able to detect whether fluid has collected in your chest. In such a case, the fluid will be drained out from your body by the help of a needle. The process to remove the fluid in case of this type of mesothelioma cancer is known as thoracentesis.
However, if you are suffering from peritoneal mesothelioma, your abdomen will be tested with the help of a special instrument called the peritoneoscope. An opening will be made into the abdomen and the instrument would be placed inside it. The instrument would detect whether fluid has collected in your abdomen. In such a case, the fluid from your abdomen will again be removed by the doctor in the same process.
You may be suffering from any kinds of mesothelioma cancer. In any case, you should know that as soon as you face any problem, you should go to the doctor for the detection. If your cancer is detected early and if it is treated early, then your chances of survival would increase. Unfortunately, the symptoms of mesothelioma is found late and therefore detected at a very later stage at a time when it is hardly curable. Within one year of detection, in maximum cases, the patients suffering from this type of cancer dies.

Of the many different cancers that afflict thousands in the United States and the rest of the world, one of the most potent and common is mesothelioma. This form of cancer arises from asbestos exposure and cancer cells can transform into a malignant state when the protective lining that covers most of the body’s internal organs is affected.
The cancer usually affects the pleura, which is really the outer lining of the lung tissue. From here, it can spread to the inner wall of the chest. Sometimes it also rears its ugly head in the peritoneum which is the inner cavity of the abdominal muscle. In some cases, the mallady has also been detected in the heart muscle, precisely in the pericardium.
Origins
There has been a lot of research conducted on the origins of mesothelioma. Most researchers are in agreement that there is an obvious co-relation between the disease and exposure to asbestos. This explains why miners are prone to the illness. Asbestos particles and dust fibers are usually the main culprits. There has also been cases where people who contracted the cancer not because they themselves were exposed but simply because of handling clothing that belonged to an exposed person. There have been questions as to whether mesothelioma can be contracted through smoking. Research has dispelled this rumour as untrue.
Examining symptoms
Since mesothelioma afflicts the lungs, one obvious symptom is shortness of breath. This is brought about by the accumulation of pleural fluid which occurs between the lung tissue and the chest wall. This tends to displace the lungs causing a feeling of “wooziness”. Sometimes this can be accompanied by chest pain. Other general symptoms include abnormal weight loss.
Diagnosis
Usually when mesothelioma is suspected, the patient is usually booked for a CT Scan and a chest x-ray. If these are inconclusive then a biopsy may be ordered. This involves getting a tissue sample which is then sent to a laboratory for more intense scrutiny.
In other cases, a doctor may order a thoracoscopy. This is a high-tech proceedure which invoves inserting a tube with a camera into the chest cavity. This then beams high-resolution images back to a computer workstation. The doctor may also decide to introduce talc, a substance used to obliterate the pleural space. This in turn prevents more fluid from accumulating and causing more pressure to be exerted on the lung tissue. If it advances, a doctor may enter into the next phase of treatment which is radiation therapy and even surgery.

Malignant Mesothelioma At a Glance
Filed Under Cancer | Leave a Comment
Malignant mesothelioma (cancer of the mesothelium) is a disease in which cells of the mesothelium become abnormal and divide without control or order. It is a rare form of cancer that most frequently arises from the cells lining the sacs of the chest (the pleura) or the abdomen (the peritoneum). Malignant mesothelioma is closely linked to exposure to asbestos - a natural fiber that was once used in manufacturing a wide variety of industrial and household products. Workers involved in asbestos mining, milling and manufacturing are at the greatest risk for developing malignant mesothelioma. Also at high risk are shipyard workers, workers in the heating and construction industries, and other tradespeople. Family members and others living with asbestos workers have an increased risk of developing malignant mesothelioma, and possibly other asbestos related diseases as well. Cases of malignant mesothelioma have even included people whose only exposure was breathing the air through ventilation systems.
Although reported incidence rates have increased in the past 20 years, malignant mesothelioma is still a relatively rare cancer. Between 1973 and 1984, there has been a threefold increase in the diagnosis of pleural mesothelioma in Caucasian males. From 1980 to the late 1990s, the death rate from malignant mesothelioma in the USA increased from 2,000 per year to 3,000, with men four times more likely to acquire it than women. The actual rates may be even higher however, since it is possible that many cases of malignant mesothelioma are misdiagnosed as adenocarcinoma of the lung, which is difficult to differentiate from mesothelioma.
The average age of diagnosis of malignant mesothelioma is 60. The average survival time varies from 4 to 18 months, and death is usually due to infection or respiratory failure from the progression of the mesothelioma.

Mesothelioma, Asbestosis and Lung Cancer continue to claim thousands of lives every year in the United States. In addition to that, the number of newly diagnosed patients keeps going up, too. A lot is being done for breast cancer and other variations of malignant diseases, however, the mesothelioma awareness movement is barely known.
But that might change. Because the public slowly seems to realize that mesothelioma is one of the deadliest cancers. There is no cure found yet, and effective treatments are only available to wealthy patients. People become more interested especially since we know that basically anybody who was or is exposed to asbestos, could theoretically develop this or any other asbestos induced disease at any point in time.
When we look for information about mesothelioma resources, there is only very little literature available. Let’s do an experiment together and go to amazon.com. First, browse to the ‘Books’ category and then do a search on ‘mesothelioma’. After that do another search on ‘breast cancer’. The result speaks for itself: 325 hits on ‘mesothelioma’, versus ‘6776′ for books about breast cancer.
Is that surprising? No, not really. After all, breast cancer is wider spread and therefore gets more attention, not only from the public, but also from research and science. You can run the same experiment in Google, by the way. The ratio between the two search terms is the same as the results we got through amazon.com.
Nonetheless, the best mesothelioma resources are still found on the Internet. The usual suspects, including Wikipedia and the big cancer websites, do provide a lot of useful information, undeniably. However, as a kidney cancer patient and someone who speculates on the possibility as to whether or not his cancer could have been caused by exposure to asbestos, I found blogs the most resourceful and informative sources to gather in depth information. Not only about mesothelioma and kidney cancer, but also asbestosis and the certain forms of lung cancers that are also evidentially linked to being exposed to this material.
Lastly, needless to say that medical advice should be sought through trained professionals only. Nonetheless, in my wife’s breast cancer and my kidney cancer journey, we both found the most valuable information in the experience that was shared by other cancer patients. Internet forums are a great place to start communicating with others who have a similar story to tell and ask all the questions you don’t want to necessarily address with your health care professional.

Mesothelioma is a rare type of cancer of the mesothelium, a lining that coats the body’s internal organs including the heart and the lungs, acquired from the exposure to asbestos or other asbestos materials.
There are three main types of Mesothelioma, pleural mesothelioma, peritoneal mesothelioma and pericardial mesothelioma. Each type has its own signs and symptoms, though some signs and symptoms are identical to these three types. Patients who are suffering from the said disease, usually do not have any idea that they have mesothelioma since some of the obvious symptoms do not normally manifest immediately after the exposure. This is the reason why the disease is complex to diagnose and has a poor prognosis.
Three Main Types of Mesothelioma
1. Pleural Mesothelioma
· One of the most common types of Mesothelioma, affecting the lungs and its protective lining and cavity
· Attacks the respiratory system of the body
· Pleural effusion is the resulting symptom of this type, which has a structure of fluid between the lining and the cavity
· Due to pleural effusion, patient may experience difficulty of breathing, dysphagia, shortness of breath, fever, persistent coughing, sudden weight loss, coughing out of blood and rasping
· with the other types of mesothelioma, this form can take 20-30 years or even more, to show some symptoms in a patient who is directly exposed to asbestos
2. Peritoneal Mesothelioma
· one of the rare types of Mesothelioma, which affects the stomach and the abdomen
· involves the lining which protects the contents of the abdomen, and it also provides a lubricating fluid, to allow the organs to function properly
· it was referred to as diffuse peritoneal mesothelioma, wherein the cancer cell is already spread out
· symptoms include: abdominal pain, body weakness, sudden weight loss, nausea, loss of appetite, constipation and abdominal swelling
· it has a very long latency period, wherein symptoms may not be apparent for a long time after the exposure
3. Pericardial Mesothelioma
· it is the rarest of the types of Mesothelioma, which affects the heart and the cavity that surrounds it
· It is characterized by a tumor in the pericardial area
· patient may suffer from chest pain, difficulty in breathing, shortness of breath, persistent coughing and palpitations
· it could take decades or more to manifest these symptoms
The most common victims with one of the types of Mesothelioma are usually people who have history in working in a place with constant exposure to asbestos. One of the most common factors is the absence or limited supply of protective equipment for the workers. Proper protective equipment is necessary when working in a hazardous environment. To prevent acquiring such dangerous disease, workers should demand their companies provide proper protective gears to ensure the safety of workers. Remember, “Prevention is better than cure”.

Mesothelioma Compensation Claims Increasing
Filed Under Cancer | Leave a Comment
While it is not 100% certain to claim that mesothelioma lung cancer has been caused by exposure to asbestos it is indisputable that it is the most likely cause.
This means litigation cases are normally more directed at proving that one company or authority was responsible rather then whether the condition is a result of asbestos or other factors such as a long term smoking habbit.
Because mesothelioma is fatal the compensation payed to victims with successful claims can be huge and when a judge awards a mesothelioma settlement it is nearly always reported in the national press. This has made asbestos injury attorneys widespread but also means that claimants should be extremely wary of the jargon put to them and the type of fee structure that their attorney is using. It is possible for the family of a deceased victim of mesothelioma to still make a litigation case for damages. This can add to the opportunity for an unscrupulous lawyer to make a fortune out of another persons grief or loss. “No win no fee” claims should be considered very cautiously as it goes without saying that if you do win damages your fee could be extremely high. This is why it is essential that you seek out as many lawyers and find out who you warm to the most and how each one differs in their approach and fees. You want to begin your case with a lawyer that you feel you can work with as your case could be drawn out.
In the US it is predicted that mesothelioma claims will peak around the year 2020 and then slowly tail off. This is because of the widespread changes that were introduced in the 1980’s to clear public buildings, factories, homes and products of asbestos to make them safe. A contrary argument goes that cases will increase as in the future there will be less excuses for co operations to make for direct accusations of poor public safety. A good example of this was demonstrated after the 2001 attacks on New York. Many claims since then for asbestos injury have been made although it was widely believed that asbestos removal was carried out in most of the buildings years before. Proving a link between a victims condition and his employer’s premises or work conditions will become ever more contentious as years go on and it is not clear that remuneration settlements will always be so high.
Many countries outside of the United States did not follow such programs of asbestos removal in the 1980’s and if the litigation culture predominant in the US were to transpose itself to countries such as China, the former USSR and the Eastern block countries in the future then there will no doubt be a large amount of claimants for lawyers to reach for many years to come.

Your Lung Cancer Symptoms in a Nutshell
Filed Under Cancer | Leave a Comment
In the early stages of lung cancer, often, you will have no symptoms. It is as the cancer grows that the symptoms begin to appear. Here’s what you should be looking for when you suspect that you have lung cancer symptoms.
Some of these symptoms may include a cough that gets worse or doesn’t seem to want to go away, breathing problems (including shortness of breath or wheezing), a constant chest pain… especially when you cough, at times you may be coughing up blood.
This is accompanied with a hoarse voice, frequent chest infections (such as pneumonia), or an infection that doesn’t go away, feeling fatigued all of the time (feeling very tired all the time), unexplained weight loss, and a loss of appetite.
Be aware that other health problems may also cause some of these same symptoms. Whatever the case, you need to immediately get checked by your doctor.
These conditions are also symptomatic of many other lung problems, so a person who has any of these symptoms should definitely pursue the cause until one is sure of the problem. When a person goes for an exam, the doctor may ask many questions about the person’s medical history, including questions about the patient’s exposure to hazardous substances.
More often than not, a person having symptoms of lung cancer will be given physical exam. If the patient has a cough that produces a sputum (mucus), the mucus itself might be examined for cancer cells. The doctor will order a chest X-ray or specialized X-ray such as the CT scan, which helps to locate any abnormal spots in the lungs. The doctor may insert a small tube called a bronchoscope through the nose or mouth and down the throat, to look inside the airways and lungs and take a sample, or biopsy, of the tumor. This is just one of several ways in which a doctor may take a biopsy sample.
However, more and more doctors are using a form of CT scan in smokers to spot small lung cancers, which are more likely to be cured as compared to a large large tumor. The technique, called helical low-dose CT scan, is much more sensitive than a regular X-ray and can detect tumors when they are very small, which would otherwise not been on a regular x-ray.
