Lung Cancer Prognosis
Filed Under Cancer | Leave a Comment
Survival rates have improved for non-small cell lung cancer because of advances in combination radiation and chemotherapy treatment. With treatment, 14% of patients can have a 5 years survival rate, a high achievement in lung cancer terms. Unfortunately, most patient will die within 12 to 18 months of diagnosis.
Small cell lung carcinoma is treated primarily with chemotherapy and radiation, as surgery has no quantifiable influence on survival. Lung cancer survival rates are higher the earlier the cancer is diagnosed. However, more than two-thirds of lung cancers are diagnosed at a late stage and so survival rates for these patients are lower.
It is no wonder that more and more people are turning to alternative treatments and switching to a cancer friendly diet as their last resort. Alternative treatments are cheap and is within the control of the patient and their family members. A major component of alternative medicine lies in what you eat.
The process start with identifying the foods that can cause or worsen cancer. The idea is to stop eating harmful food before you begin to consume specific anti-cancer food. Be prepared to forgo many types of food that are known and not-so-known to contain cancer-causing fungi. Then, eating cancer-friendly food and cancer-curing food can commence to produce optimal results without obstacles.
Cancer can thrive under these 4 situations in our body:
Weak immunity
Acidity
Excessive Toxin
Lack Of Oxygen
To thoroughly eliminate cancer, you have to rectify each and every one of the above scenario. Apart from diet, maintaining an active lifestyle, smoking cessation and living in a smoke-free and asbestos free environment will greatly increase your chance of survival.

There’s no doubt that stage 4 cancer is one of the most horrible things that can happen to anyone, however, there have been contradictory articles regarding the life expectancy of a cancer at such an advanced stage. As a result, this article has been written to spell out, for once and for all, the facts about this issue.
Before I begin, let’s get one thing straight. People who are suffering from any type of stage 4 cancer have very low 5-year survival rates. This is unfortunately a fact of life as the human race has still not come up with a cure for cancer. Despite this, you should never lose hope as there have been people who survived a stage 4 cancer and lived to tell the tale. It is highly recommended that you read their tales and draw strength and inspiration from them.
I will now go through a concise analysis of the life expectancy of 3 types of cancer.
Lung Cancer
Statistics show that people with stage 4 lung cancer have a 32% chance of living for one year while only 2% live longer than 5 years. This shouldn’t be a cause for concern as that 2% means that there is still hope that you can enjoy many more years with your loved ones.
Colon Cancer
Unfortunately, there have been very few cases of people who have lived more than 5 years with stage 4 of this disease. However, with improvements in chemotherapy you can control the symptoms and prolong the life of a sufferer which could mean so much for them and their loved ones.
Bone Cancer
The good news about stage 4 bone cancer is that the 5-year survival rate is between 19 and 49 percent. That may seem encouraging but keep in mind that it depends on whether the cancer is benign or malignant.
Don’t ever forget that your chances of beating cancer or increasing stage 4 cancer life expectancy is strongly dependent on your determination and attitude throughout.

As a current lung cancer survivor I continue to look for things that I believe might be helpful to anyone who has been diagnosed with lung cancer and the people that surround those individuals.
I am constantly reading articles that were written by people who have opinions on what are the right and wrong ways to treat lung cancer and most of them have merit in the fact that they are usually backed up with some facts and testimonials but I have yet to read anything that would give me the confidence to say, “This will cure lung cancer.”
I am confident that there are some very exciting things being researched out there that hopefully provide steps in the right direction like these tidbits of information that came from the ‘Cancer Update From Johns Hopkins’ that I received in late February.
The Article begins by reminding us that we all have cancer cells lurking in our body being held in check by our immune systems. When our immune systems are strong and on the job, cancer cells are destroyed before the can multiply and form tumors. When a person is diagnosed with cancer it is an indication that there has been a breakdown in the defenses that your immune system provides. So what causes these breakdowns? Generally the arrival of cancer is an indication of multiple nutritional deficiencies. These could be due to genetic factors, environmental or food and lifestyle factors. A solid diet including supplements are key to keeping the immune system strong and functioning.
Where Johns Hopkins is starting to change their thinking is in regards to chemotherapy and radiation as the only way to try to eliminate cancer.
For those of you who are not familiar with the ‘Batman and Robin’ of cancer treatment, we will start with Chemotherapy.
Chemotherapy involves poisoning the rapidly-growing cancer cells which is a good thing. The downside to chemotherapy, it knows no boundaries so it will destroy rapid-growing healthy cells just as quickly. Chemotherapy can also cause damage to the liver, kidneys, heart, lungs etc. There are various medications that you can take while undergoing chemotherapy and radiation treatment that will assist you in reclaiming things like red and white blood cells both crucial in your on going fight and survival, but these provide short term assistance.
Radiation is a little more cut and dry in its effects it destroys cancer cells but also destroys healthy cells and can damage healthy tissue and organs. Radiation is the proverbial ‘Bull’ in the ‘china shop’ that is your body. I could write another three pages on the immediate effects of both on the human body, but I think that you get the point, both have the potential to do as much harm as good. As far as long term consequences, as a current lung cancer survivor of three years, I’m not sure what long term means. Sounds like another article for another time.
Although both chemo and radiation can reduce the tumor size, when the body has too much toxic burden placed upon it by these two, the immune system can be compromised or destroyed altogether. This is what almost took my life in June of 07 when I found myself fighting off an infection with a very depleted immune system. The equivalent of fighting off a lion with a toothpick. Luckily for me, I ended up in intensive care before the various infections that were raging through me ended up putting an end to me.
Chemo and radiation can also cause cancer cells to mutate and become resistant and difficult to destroy.
With myself, surgery was not an option. There was a fear with my small cell lung cancer spreading quickly by exposing the cells, so surgery has not been an option at any time. I will tell you this much, the two of them together, Chemo combined with radiation, comprised the treatment that I received for small cell lung cancer, that treatment has been the driving force behind my fight and has helped me stay alive as long as I have.
So here it is, John Hopkins thought is that an effective way to battle cancer is to starve the cancer cells by not making the foods that these cells need to multiply available to them.
According to Johns Hopkins, depriving cancer cells of such things as sugar and sugar substitutes, table salt, milk, beef and pork as well as coffee, most tea and chocolate will have a huge positive impact in your fight. As far as water is concerned drink purified or filtered water no tap water or distilled.
A diet consisting of 80% fresh vegetables and juice, whole grains, seed nuts and a little fruit combined with about 20% cooked food including beans would be ideal to move your body from the acidic breeding ground for cancer cells to a more alkaline and healthy environment. I cannot begin to tell you the benefits of fresh vegetable juice which will put live enzymes into your system within 15 minutes to help enhance the growth of healthy cells. I would like to add that the introduction of organic vegetables and food into my system have been a key component of my early cancer success. There are some very good cancer diet books at your local library that can help you get on the right track as well as the internet and your health provider who will also be able to answer your questions, point is do some research in the field of proper cancer diet and nutrition it could mean the difference between life and death.
They also talk about the importance of the right supplements to help build up the immune system. I will tell you also to think about the importance of vitamin D to the health of the human body. Exercising daily which can be as simple as walking for a half hour a day and deep breathing to help get more oxygen to the cells since cancer cells cannot thrive in an oxygenated environment. Johns Hopkins also talks about keeping a positive attitude and trying to limit stress as keys to fighting a successful battle.
I agree with all of the things that they are saying,(how often do you here that?) Let me ask you, “Why would a drastic change in your diet have such a dramatic effect on your health?” Do I really need to point this out to you?
You might want to sit down while you read this next section if you are startled by things that are as obvious as the nose on your face.
Had we paid more attention to begin with what we have been eating, we might not be a country that faces more health issues then the rest of the world. I am not just talking about cancer. I’m also talking about heart issues, high blood pressure, stroke, heart attack, diabetes and probably includes a number of things that you are now taking one of the hundreds of new medications that have been advertised non stop as of late. About that, did it ever occur to you as you were listening to the various side effects of everything being advertised that these new wonder drugs are more detrimental to your health then what ever it is that they are treating? Here’s another thought for you, how many new prescriptions will you eventually need to counteract the side effects of the first prescription that you never needed to begin with? I don’t want to get too far off subject, but the prescription craze that we have so easily fallen into coincides nicely with the amount of poor nutritional choices we make. We have become the “happy meal” society, surrounded by giant size portions of questionable products. We are far too busy to prepare our own meals so we eat fast food and pre made dinners packaged in plastic containers for our convenience. Problem being that we have no idea of the quality of the product and the container that we are heating by microwaves releases toxins into the food we eat when we heat it. I am not even going to discuss the various chemicals that have been in use to grow our food or the amount of toxins that we ply upon ourselves in an attempt to make our teeth whiter, our breath fresher our skin firmer. The amount of children being born with autism coupled with the steady increase in life altering diseases that we are inflicted with should be telling us something. The childhood obesity epidemic in this country should be telling us something.
We could look back over the past few decades and look at the trail of personal destruction that we have opened ourselves up to if you want starting with banks foreclosing on our Nations family owned farms which I believe was the beginning of things all the way through the get rich quick decade where wealth on paper backed by exaggerated real estate values helped us all reach a little farther then we had any business reaching. Bringing us to today where unemployment and foreclosure have brought us back down to the Earth which we continue to destroy.
Our view on the environment seems to follow suit with the rest of the way we choose to live. In denial. But again, I’ve strayed off my path. Back to what we were talking about, Johns Hopkins is right, for the cancer patient, our diet helps determine the outcome and overall success of our treatment. My point in case you missed it is that you should not wait for a life altering event to begin taking better care of yourself and taking responsibility for your health, which means paying attention to your eating habits as well as the quality of the food you eat. If you are responsible for a family you have an obligation to ensure that your family is being provided for properly. There is a very simple thought here, change your eating habits now by investing a little time, effort and thought up front and the return on that investment will be reduced health cost in the future and a longer, happier life for the people you are responsible for.
I don’t know what the cure for cancer is hopefully someone will find it and make it available for anyone and everyone who needs it regardless of their financial status or health care plan. I do know this for a fact, lung cancer is the leading killer among all cancers. Diet, Chemotherapy, radiation and any other alternatives that are found to be of value should be explored when it comes to your treatment. As of today the only guaranteed treatment for surviving lung cancer that I know to be 100% effective is avoidance.
Look at early detection testing, (Respiragene is the only one I know of) along with a strong smoking sensation program(many available programs out there) if you are a person who smokes. Review your diet and change your eating habits if need be to become a healthier person. A little exercise and some vitamins and maybe your immune system will remain at a level that allows you to avoid many life altering illnesses. Take the money you were going to spend on the next PlayStation game for your 6 year old and build him or her a sandbox or swing set instead. I believe that kids who are active and allowed to get their hands dirty reduce their chances for immediate and long term health issues.
Sure there is no accounting for your genetic makeup which makes us all individuals and many times is the main catalyst in deciding which of us will be more susceptible to what. What I’m talking about is controlling the things in your life that you can control to lessen the likelihood of you needing to make life and death decisions regarding treatments. Who knows maybe we can change the path we are currently on and set a better example for generations to come.

Lung cancer is the the number one disease caused by smoking. This is a recent development as heart disease used to be the number one disease caused by smoking. This development has brought to the forefront the need to find better treatments and cures for lung disease. On the lung cancer eMedicine site it explains in great detail the different types such as small cell and non-small cell lung disease, with non-small lung disease being the most common type of disease to date. Treatments for the different types of non-small cell lung disease are similar to each other if they are in the same stages.
Lung cancer eMedicine information shows that lung cancer is the fastest growing smoking related disease in the world. Men and women alike are faring badly in terms of who it affects the most, and in both cases it is the number two cancer killer to date. For men it is only second to prostate cancer and in women it is second only to breast cancer. In the United States men suffer the most from this disease, but in the rest of the world it is becoming more common in women.
It is unusual for it to advance without symptoms. According to eMedicine, common symptoms of this disease are wheezing, coughing up blood, fatigue, pneumonia (often recurring), bone pain, chest pain, difficulty swallowing, unexplained weight loss, anorexia, and much more. Any person who smokes should not discount any of these symptoms and should seek medical attention should any of these symptoms occur.
Once a person is diagnosed their prognosis is generally not good. In fact, lung cancer eMedicine claims that about 14% of people diagnosed have a chance of survival over five years. This is the lowest rate of expected survival for any type of cancer. However, new treatments are being tested and some types of lung cancer has responded better than others for these new, targeted treatments. Also, eating well, and maintaining a healthy lifestyle will also assist in prolonging the live of someone with lung cancer and they should not hesitate to quit smoking, exercise and eat better to increase their quality of life and better their chances of survival.

The link between asbestos and lung cancer is well established today. However, this was not always the case. For many decades, asbestos was considered to be a miracle mineral. It is an excellent insulator and this was one of its primary uses. Asbestos was also incorporated into a wide range of products manufactured.
Suspicions that asbestos exposure could cause serious health problems existed as far back as the last decade of the nineteenth century. It is thought that those interested in promoting asbestos consumption acted to discredit such reports.
By 1931, the British government had concluded that asbestos was possibly harmful to the body and took steps to ensure safety of those handling asbestos. The US government undertook similar actions during the 1970s.
Unfortunately, by that time, many thousands of people had their lives seriously affected by asbestos related lung cancer and other health problems. Asbestos was widely used in factories, homes and elsewhere.
Asbestos causes problems like scarring in the lungs, lung cancer, asbestosis and pleural plaques. It also causes a deadly, aggressive type of cancer called mesothelioma.
Unlike normal lung cancer which affects the tissues of the lung itself, mesothelioma affects the lining around the lungs called the pleura. This type of cancer arises almost only due to asbestos exposure.
Even a short exposure to asbestos can cause mesothelioma. Further, the cancer can show up several decades after the asbestos exposure.
As with most lung-related cancers, smoking increases the odds of contracting mesothelioma significantly. Some studies indicate that a smoker who has been exposed to asbestos has 50 to 90 times the chances of developing mesothelioma and other cancers of the lung, when compared to a non-smoker with similar asbestos exposure. A non-smoker who has been exposed to asbestos has about 5 times higher chance of developing mesothelioma compared to people who were never exposed to asbestos.
If you have had any exposure to asbestos either in the workplace or elsewhere, you should have regular screenings to detect any abnormalities in the lung. And this should be continued because lung cancer can show up as late as 50 years after the asbestos exposure. Early diagnosis of lung cancer offers the best hope for survival.
Diagnostic methods for detecting asbestos related lung cancers include going through a patient’s medical history as well as performing chest x-rays, MRI scans, CAT scans, tissue sampling and biopsy.
The outlook for those diagnosed with mesothelioma (and other types of lung cancers) is generally not encouraging. In some cases, the life expectancy for someone diagnosed with mesothelioma may be as little as 2-3 months. Multi-treatment methods used in some clinical trials have managed to significantly enhance life expectancy — one such trial achieved a 40% survival rate at five years.
Treatment for mesothelioma often combines chemotherapy, radiation and surgery. In many cases though, surgery may be ruled out because the cancer is diagnosed at a late stage. There are new chemotherapy treatments available that seem promising.
The first drug developed specifically to treat mesothelioma was Alimta, which was approved by the Food and Drugs Administration in 2004. When Alimta is used in combination with Cisplatin, which is also a drug used to treat cancers, it was found to increase patients’ life expectancy. There is intensive research going on to produce a cure for these aggressive asbestos related cancers and these efforts may eventually produce a reliable cure.

Lung Cancer Prevention
Filed Under Cancer | Leave a Comment
Circumstances and life style factors that increase a person?s chances of developing a disease are known as risk factors. On the contrary things that prevent disease from developing are called protective factors. Prevention involves increasing protective factors and decreases risk factors. There are various risk factors for lung cancer. Smoking is considered to be a factor that adds to the risk of lung cancer. The risk is also increased for passive smokers who are exposed to tobacco smoke indirectly.
It is possible to prevent lung cancer if it is not hereditary. In case there is history of lung cancer in the family, it may not be possible to totally eliminate chances of developing the disease. It is however possible to reduce chances by following an active lifestyle. Regular exercise lowers risks. Additionally, chances of developing lung cancer may reduce if a person consumes low fat diet that is high in fiber content.
Treatment of cancer is a painful process for the patient. Treatment ranges from radiotherapy, chemotherapy to surgery. The course of treatment depends upon the stage of disease. Sometimes a combination of treatment procedures may have to be administered simultaneously. Cancer in the third and fourth stage qualifies the extent of life span. Lung cancer treatment is not a guarantee that the disease will not recur. Surgery, in case of malignant tumors spreading to other parts of the body becomes quite difficult. Such delicate and complicated surgery often poses a risk to heart and windpipe.
Prevention is always better than cure. People may take advice and suggestions from their own doctor about risk factors faced by them. It is also necessary for people to be aware of various symptoms of lung cancer. Timely action can be taken to abate its development. There is plenty of information available online about preventive measures. Cancer institutes also organize seminars to educate on importance of prevention of lung cancer.

Lung cancer is an ailment of unrestrained cell development in the lung tissues. This growth may lead to metastasis, spreading to the adjoining tissues and penetrating prematurely the lungs. It is the most popular cancer cause of death in men, and the second most common in women.
Frequent symptoms of lung cancer:
1. Continuous chest throbbing
2. Persistent coughs that become severe
3. Shortness of breath, puffing, or huskiness
4. Constant troubles with pneumonia or bronchitis
5. Coughing up blood
6. Inflammation of the neck and face
7. Loss of appetite or significant weight loss
8. Exhaustion
Types of Lung Cancers:
A. Small-cell lung cancer occurs when malignant cells form in the lung tissues.
Small lung cancer has three different types, classified according to the forms of cells developing as cancer. These are:
1. Small cell carcinoma
2. Union of small cell and large cell carcinoma.
3. Joint small cell carcinoma.
These three kinds may contain many different types of cells. The cancer cells of all types may grow and multiply in different ways.
Stages of Small Cell Lung Cancer
Limited stage - cancer starts in the lung tissues, and in the adjacent lymph nodes. Lymph nodes are tiny, bean-shaped structures near the lungs.
Extensive Stage - cancer has propagated beyond the lungs to other parts of the body.
B. Large-cell lung cancer is a disease in which malignant cells form in the tissues of the lungs.
Five types of large-cell lung cancer
The five types of large-cell lung cancer have differing varieties of cancer cells. The cancer cells of each category produce and multiply in unusual effects:
1. Squamous cell carcinoma - Cancer starts in the squamous cells, thin flat cells that appear like fish scales. It’s called epidermoid carcinoma.
2. Large cell carcinoma - Cancer in which the cells are big and seem to be irregular when examined under a microscope.
3. Adenosquamous carcinoma - Cancer that begins in cells. Cancer cells appear to be firm when inspected under a microscope.
4. Adenocarcinoma - Cancer that begins in groups in glandular assets.
5. Undifferentiated carcinoma - Cancer cells that do not seem to be normal. They spread fast.
Treatment:
1. Surgery - Surgery is the ideal medication for lung cancer. The body is normally opened up for the lungs to be treated directly.
2. Radiation is a common treatment for lung cancer. Radiation therapy utilizes high-energy rays to destroy cancer cells. It distresses cells only in the treated area.
a. External radiation is the most common radiation treatment for people with lung cancer. Radiation comes from a huge apparatus outside your body. Mainly people go to the hospital or clinic for treatment. Treatments are typically 5 days a week for more than a few weeks.
b. Internal radiation is rare. Radiation is released from a seed, wire, or another device, to the body.
Treatment of Large-Cell Lung Cancer:
o Chemotherapy - This is cancer treatment making use of drugs to prevent the increase of cancer cells. Drugs are either taken by mouth or injected in the veins and muscles to destroy cancer cells. These drugs go into the bloodstream to treat cancer cells in the body. When chemotherapy is placed straight in the spinal column, an organ, or a body cavity like the abdomen, these drugs generally distress cancer cells in those parts.
o Laser therapy - Laser is used to destroy cancer cells.

Mesothelioma Treatment Options Explained
Filed Under Cancer | Leave a Comment
Treatment of any cancer is tedious but mesothelioma is a cancer that needs urgent and extensive treatment regime. This is must in order to improve quality of life of patient if he is in terminal stages of cancer. If he is in the early stages, certainly apt treatment can save the life of the patient or at least his life can be extended. No doubt early diagnosis of mesothelioma cancer can help doctors to sketch out a good treatment plan for the patient. But the sad part is that the cancer is usually diagnosed in late stages due to its symptoms mimicking those of severe pneumonia. Unless a lung tissue biopsy is done, diagnosis of mesothelioma cannot be ascertained.
But medical researchers have paved way for some amazing treatment options for the cancer these days. Though all the treatments have not yet been verified, many of them called as clinical trials are proving extremely helpful for the patients to come out of the difficulties.
Let’s see what prime treatment options are there for mesothelioma patient:
o Surgery: If the cancer is in its early stages, surgery is the best option. If the malignant mesothelioma lies in one of the parts of chest, surgeons remove that part of the chest lining with cancer along with some tissue surrounding it. But if cancer is present in more than one place, pleurectomy or decortication need to be done. Extrapleural pneumonectomy is the procedure to remove the diseased lung, portion of pericardium, part of the diaphragm, and part of parietal pleura. Debulking is the procedure to remove as much as cancer possible in little advanced stages.
o Chemotherapy: This conventional mode of therapy is used to kill cancer cells. Pemetrexed is the chemotherapy drug first used and approved for mesothelioma treatment. New drugs like Raltitrexed and Ranpirnase are also used. Some others like Cisplatin and Carboplatin are also used with inconsistent results. Side effects of chemotherapy however have to be understood before so that patient’s compliance can be improved with positive mental outlook.
o Radiation: High intensity radiation is given to the localized tumor mass. Size of the tumor and symptoms like breathlessness can be reduced with radiation and also the side effects are relatively fewer.
o Clinical Trials: Many different clinical trials are instituted by experienced doctors though the cure is not guaranteed. With consent from patients, such treatments are executed. It is a sort of trial and error method, however, with latest clinical trials, huge decrease in symptoms of mesothelioma patients is observed. Such treatments pave way for better mesothelioma treatments in future.
o Photodynamic therapy: Use of LASER beam to kill cancer cells is indicated in this therapy. This therapy still is in research stage and usually combined with pleurectomy or extrapleural pneumonectomy.
o Immunotherapy: It is intended to build immunity to fight cancer cells. Use of different therapies like gene therapy, monoclonal antibodies therapy, and cytokine proteins like interleukins and interferon therapy comes under this mode.
o Nutrition and psychotherapy: This is certainly needed to improve quality of life in mesothelioma patients and also to improve compliance to treatments chosen.
o Alternative therapies like homeopathy are also tried and used successfully as an adjunct to main treatment.
In short, the treatment of mesothelioma can be done successfully if diagnosed at early stages and if full patient’s cooperation is received.

Mesothelioma Treatment: A Guide
Filed Under Cancer | Leave a Comment
Mesothelioma is a malignant tumor of the mesothelium caused by exposure to asbestos fibers. Because mesothelioma is very hard to control and is known for its late onset of symptoms, the U.S. National Cancer Institute (NCI) is sponsoring clinical trials that are used to find new treatments and efficient ways to use current treatments.
The most popular method is radiation therapy, also called radiotherapy, which involves using high-energy rays to kill cancer cells and shrink tumors. Radiotherapy affects only the treated area during the treatment. The radiation may come from a machine that produces radiation through thin plastic tubes into the area where the cancer cells are found.
A common treatment for the disease is surgery that involves the removal of part of the lining of the chest or abdomen and some of the tissue around it. In case of pleural cancer, a lung may be removed in an operation called a pneumonectomy. In few cases, a part of the diaphragm, the muscle below the lungs that helps with breathing, is also removed.
Anti-cancer drugs are used to kill these malignant cells throughout the body. This is known as chemotherapy and involves injecting the drug into a vein (intravenous or IV). Currently, doctors are also studying the effectiveness of putting chemotherapy directly into the chest or abdomen.
There are various procedures that are used for the treatment of mesothelioma. Generally, the treatment type depends on the location of the cancer, the stage of the disease, the patient’s age, and general health. Pleural effusion that is caused by heart failure or infection can usually be resolved by directing treatment, however, when testing has realized no diagnosis and fluid continues to build or recur, doctors may recommend chest tube drainage and chemical pleurodesis. Chemical pleurodesis is a technique in which a sclerosing agent is used in treatment. It is used to abrade the pleural surfaces producing an adhesion between the parietal and visceral pleurae, which prevents from further effusion by eliminating the space in pleura. Talc is considered the most effective agent for pleurodesis.

Finding a Mesothelioma Cancer Treatment Center - Help For Mesothelioma Patients
Filed Under Cancer | Leave a Comment
The aftermath of a mesothelioma diagnosis can be a very stressful and overwhelming time for mesothelioma patients and their families. One of the many important decisions to make during this period is where to receive mesothelioma treatment. There are several key factors to keep in mind when deciding on a cancer treatment center. With the help of your doctor and trusted family members, choosing a mesothelioma treatment center can allow you to exercise a certain degree of control over the course of your mesothelioma treatment. Above all, it is important to remember that the goal of choosing a mesothelioma cancer treatment center is to to find a facility that you feel comfortable with and a dedicated medical that team you trust.
When choosing a mesothelioma cancer treatment center, first the mesothelioma patient must decide if he or she wants to be treated at a cancer facility that specializes in treating mesothelioma cancer, or one that treats patients with a number of different kinds of cancer. Next, the mesothelioma patient must decide whether to choose a mesothelioma hospital that offers traditional types of treatment (such as chemotherapy, surgery, and radiation) or non-traditional types of mesothelioma treatment (such as clinical trials that test new drugs). Once you have established the criteria you are looking for in a mesothelioma treatment center, come up with a list of cancer hospitals that fit your needs by asking your doctor, family members, friends, and cancer organizations for suggestions.
After you have developed a list of potential mesothelioma hospitals that fit your criteria, you must evaluate each one in order to determine which one is the best choice for you. Learning the answers to the following questions can help you decide which mesothelioma cancer center will best serve your needs.
1. Has the mesothelioma cancer center been recognized by one or more respected organizations such as the National Cancer Institute, American College of Surgeons, or Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations?
2. Is the medical staff at the cancer center familiar with the treatment of mesothelioma?
3. Does the mesothelioma hospital offer a variety of mesothelioma treatment options?
4. If the mesothelioma cancer treatment center is not located near your home, is the medical staff there willing and able to coordinate your care with your local doctors?
5. Is medical care at the mesothelioma cancer hospital covered under your insurance plan?
Visiting the mesothelioma treatment center and talking to current patients (if possible) are additional steps you can take to ensure that you feel confident that you are choosing the right facility. Your primary care physician, any mesothelioma doctors or cancer specialists you have seen, and your family members can also provide support and guidance as you make this important decision. Remember, you have the right to choose where you are treated. Make sure you are comfortable with the facility, mesothelioma doctors, and mesothelioma treatment regimen you will be receiving at the cancer center you choose.
